One cute couple!

This is Jen & Walter, one cute couple right?!? They are fantastic & they are very dear friends of ours who were engaged this last fall & will be getting married back home in Texas this May. We spent this weekend celebrating Jen & Walter & had a blast at two wonderful parties in their honor.

On Friday, the girls all had a bachelorette party/lingerie shower for Jen at Pot & Box, where we had some yummy food & drinks, in a fabulous flower shop/studio space (with a fabulous owner, by the way – thanks, Lisa, you’re the best!), we had a demonstration by Lisa on how to make boutonnieres & corsages for Jen’s wedding, & we got to watch Jen open all her gifts (I’m blushing as I type this)! Jen’s sister, Stephanie, put this great party together & it was so wonderful to have her here to celebrate with us.

While the girls were at the flower shop, the boys had their own shindig where they ended the night rocking out in Mark’s basement – I wonder when they’ll take the band on the road & go on tour?

Saturday we all reconvened for an engagement party at Leslie’s house, where we again had great food & drink, a slide show of photos that Jen’s sister Stephanie put together of photos of Jen & Walter through the years, & of course we got to visit with the stars of the weekend again – Jen & Walter!

Ryan & I are lucky enough to have Jen & Walter living literally just down the path from our apartment & in the same apartment complex as us & we love bumping into them & having impromptu dinner parties, etc. whenever we can.

Congrats, Jen & Walter, it was a wonderful weekend to celebrate love & two lovely people!

The 48th Ann Arbor Film Fest

Poster@cafe

As Val mentioned in the previous post I was invited again to do the design work for this year’s Ann Arbor Film Fest. While last year’s fest had a clear theme of maps and mapping this year’s fest didn’t quite have a clear theme. At the brainstorming meeting I was shown a stack of Frank Lloyd Wright postcards and the word structure was tossed around here and there. After several drafts, the end result was a FLLW inspired collage of some hand-drawn and hand-created textures and some digitally illustrated forms. The posters I designed are currently scattered about Ann Arbor and Ypsi, the Michigan Theater is decorated with elements inspired by my design, and though not posted here there are some pretty great t-shirts I designed being worn around town. I’ll post some more refined and polished images on my portfolio site in the near future in the meantime enjoy a few pics of my work from around town.

Also, check out this really great animated version of my design by local animator Martin Thorburn, who also did a great promo spot for last year’s fest materials as well.

Spring is Here (or the Great Shave)

So I got lazy this Winter and refused to shave very often which ultimately lead me to grow lots of facial hair. Since spring has officially arrived and we were temporarily blessed with warm weather, and I just grew tired of the facial hair, I decided to shave the other day. So here are a few picks which are a true sign that spring is here.

Before
Before the shave.

During
During the shave.

Stache?

Finally a clean shave.

Opening Night

Ryan & I had the pleasure of attending the 48th Ann Arbor Film Festival‘s opening night reception & screening at the Michigan Theater last night; we enjoyed good company, good food & drink, & had a great time! Missed Aches, by Joanna Priestley, was one of my favorite films of the night last night.

Ryan did the design (future blog post to come about this!) for both last year’s & this year’s Ann Arbor Film Festival & I think the printed schedule catalogs, posters, & t-shirts came out great!

Tempeh Joes

Tempeh Joes

So last week the special dinner at one of the local vegetarian restaurants, Seva, was tempeh joes. Since having one last week I’ve had the craving for another and since it was a weekly special I needed to make one for myself. It’s pretty simple so here it is:

1 package of tempeh diced
1 medium onion diced (I used a purple one on hand)
4 cloves of garlic minced
1 jalpeño minced
1 can of dice fire roasted tomatoes
3-4 tablespoons of chilipowder (I used a combination of La Mesa dark and Smoked Chili powders)
1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil or olive oil
1/2-1 cup white wine
Salt and pepper

The recipe is easy. Heat up the oil up in a pan over medium heat. Add the tempeh, onions, garlic, and jalapeño, cook until onions start to become translucent and the tempeh starts to brown. Add the chili powder and cook for another minute or 2. Add the can of tomatoes and the white wine, cook at medium for another few minutes and then turn the heat down and let it cook on low for a little while longer. Add some salt and pepper to season it further. Serve it up on a bun with whatever toppings you like, we just added a slice of cheddar cheese.

As for the baked fries in the photo. Just follow this previous post, I spiced these up with a bit of my chili powder mix (La Mesa Dark and Smoked Chili), another spice concoction mainly used for burgers (Chili powder, mace, paprika, cayenne, white pepper, coarse ground black pepper, kosher salt, onion powder, cumin, and garlic powder), and some freshly ground sea salt. The mace in the burger spice was a nice sweet addition to the fries.

The pics are a bit dark, but the food was delicious.

The Ides of March

There’s a lot going on this week… We just switched to Daylight Saving Time (which I know I was feeling when my alarm went off early this morning & my body still felt it was an hour earlier), today is the Ides of March, & this Wednesday, March 17th, is St. Patrick’s Day. And, believe it or not, we are seeing signs that spring is really coming – even in Michigan!

Bulbs are popping up out of the winter ground & blooming, the trees are budding, the snow has melted, the birds are chirping, & we’ve even seen a couple ducks return to our pond already; I feel like singing…”The hills are alive, with the sound of music…”! Sorry, I just can’t help myself.

Here are a few photos I’ve taken this week, to get you in the mood for spring:

A nice place to come home to

I like making my apartment/home a nice place to come home to & finding little treasures here & there to make it feel homey. Here are some things that I’ve picked up & that I love having around our house…

Our friend Abigail has a lovely home & had these lovely, white, porcelain vases that I had to get for myself – here they are (well one of them, at least)…

And I picked up a set of four of these lovely silver lamp shades from Apple Annie’s in Ypsi…

And there’s always some lovely potted plants & flowers around to brighten up our home too, which I enjoy…

And, someday when Ryan & I have a house of our own, I like to think about what we might do with our home – like have an awesome bathroom, like this one (LOVE that clawfoot tub!)…

Enjoy the show

I grew up in Gatesville, TX (fun fact, Gatesville is known as the “Spur Capital of Texas”) & had the pleasure of having a functioning drive-in theater, The Last Drive-In Picture Show, (they also have an indoor theater attached) to enjoy & conveniently located very close to my home.

To this day, I love going to the movies & I especially appreciate the beauty of old theaters & drive-in movies. Now, living in Ann Arbor, I have the pleasure of having two lovely, old theaters right downtown – the Michigan Theater & the State Theater.

Going to the movies is always fun, but something about going to see a movie in an old theater or drive-in movie is extra special; they have a certain charm & character that modern theaters just don’t possess. So, I encourage you to seek out places like this, grab yourself a bucket of popcorn & a soda, & sit back & enjoy the show!
