Fresh picked, homegrown, homemade, home canned

I couldn’t resist using this photo as the start of this post – this is my little brother, who just before I took this picture of & told him it would be funny if he stood by that sign & pretended to pick his nose he laughed & happily agreed with me & proceeded to do just that; sometimes it’s good to not take yourself too seriously! This photo actually has nothing at all to do with this post, but it was just too good to pass up.

But, seriously, on to the matter at hand… I LOVE basil! And we have done pretty well with what we planted on our patio garden this year; in fact, we’ve done so well that we decided to try our first ever, homegrown, homemade, & home canned crack at pesto. We have made our own pesto before, but never tried canning anything so this part of it was all new & exciting to us. We used this recipe for pesto from Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything Vegetarian & altered it only slightly by adding in a little pepper.

And, to celebrate, we’re enjoying some freshly made pesto this morning on our breakfast sandwiches with egg, fresh tomatoes from our garden, and a little mozzarella cheese – yum; summer gardening is a beautiful thing!
