Garden goodies

Garden herbs

We were out of town for about 2 weeks & returned to a very happy herb garden which needed some trimming/taming. One of the first things I did when we got home was cut some fresh dill, basil, mint, oregano, and thyme and put them in vases all over the house – not only do they look pretty, but they smell wonderful too. Happy gardening!

Deep in the heart of Texas

Sunset

We took a long 4th of July holiday and enjoyed a wonderful vacation/road trip to Texas to visit family and friends – had lots of fun, great food, and even better company during our trip! About 20 hours from our home to our final destination and then we turned around and drove back after about a week and a half – yes, that is a LONG time in the car, but we were able to bring Melody along with us which made it all worthwhile. I sometimes forget how much I miss it until I’m back there – the sky, the land, and most importantly the people we love. You can check out more photos from our trip here.

Father’s Day weekend

Father's Day weekend 2014

The weather here has been really mild so far this summer and I have really enjoyed it – 70′s-80′s with a cool breeze and it doesn’t get much better than that! We had gorgeous weather all weekend and were lucky enough to enjoy it at an outdoor, backyard get-together at our neighbor’s home on Saturday; I loved their idea of putting iced drinks in a wheelbarrow too! And I enjoyed chatting with my Dad and my Granddaddy on the phone on Sunday; since we’re so far apart, I couldn’t see them in person, but it was nice to hear their voices. Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads out there!

Smile for the camera!

B'nai Mitzvah

As I mentioned in my post here, it was so nice to visit with family in El Paso a couple weeks ago and I enjoyed snapping some photos while we were all together too. Here are some of my favorites… You can find more online here.

marvelous mitzvah

El Paso - early summer 2014

The photo above is a view of the Franklin Mountains from Temple Mount Sinai, in El Paso, TX, where we enjoyed a wonderful long weekend with family, celebrating my mother-in-law’s and Ryan’s Aunt’s (and 4 others in their group) b’nai mitzvah. It was great to get back to Texas too, but I didn’t miss that blazing hot summer heat – the high in El Paso yesterday was listed at 108! After a very long, very cold winter here though, I must admit that the warmth of the sun and that blue Texas sky were a sight for sore eyes. Even some of the plants look like they’re on fire; we saw lots of cactus, lantana, and this plant in the photo below (anyone know what this is?) all over the place there.

And a trip to Texas is never complete without some Texas BBQ and cold, Texas beer to wash it down with – thank you Rudy’s BBQ! You can browse more photos from our trip here.

weekend fun

Summer patio

We had a fun and productive holiday weekend in which we found ourselves enjoying some r&r time with friends, good food (grilled peaches that were a little like this and our own, revised version of this potato salad which we used this tasty hatch chile pesto on – yum!), visited Maker Works to use their laser cutter for this project Ryan’s working on, and we got our garden planted. Filling up our garden boxes this year are: sugar snap peas, tomatoes (Fantastic, Green Zebra, and Grape), lots of herbs (varieties of thyme, oregano, parsley, basil, chives, spearmint, and orange mint), lots of pepper varieties, and flowers (Salvia, Marigolds, and Gazania). I find myself enjoying my little corner of the world more and more these days – the fact that the world is so very green and everything is blooming again certainly doesn’t hurt!

on flowers

Lilacs

I cut some lilacs from our backyard today; we’ve got two varieties, this lavender one and a white lilac as well, and they both smell heavenly. I was also treated to some peonies and alstroemeria.

A few quotes on flowers I liked:

  • “I must have flowers, always, and always.” ― Claude Monet
  • “A garden to walk in and immensity to dream in–what more could he ask? A few flowers at his feet and above him the stars.” ― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
  • “She wore flowers in her hair and carried magic secrets in her eyes. She spoke to no one. She spent hours on the riverbank. She smoked cigarettes and had midnight swims…” ― Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things

fun in the sun

Laying in a field of grass on a sunny Saturday

It was a gorgeous day in Ann Arbor yesterday – we took advantage of it with a bike ride in town, a game of HORSE at our neighborhood park, and ended the day with bag toss in our yard and hamburgers on the grill. So nice to enjoy the sunshine!
