Hope you all enjoyed a fun and exciting, as well as restful and relaxing, Labor Day Weekend! Ours consisted of college football (Melody is pictured above supporting our team…although we weren’t happy to find that the channel they were airing the Texas Tech game on here was showing a Tigers game instead and we couldn’t see the game live on TV until almost the end of the 3rd quarter; my brother says we can fix that by moving to Lubbock!), yard work, movies at home, and some delicious cooking. We used our garden peppers to make hot sauce and pickled jalapenos and Ryan made some delicious guacamole with one of our garden habanero peppers and this Blue Apron meal (pictured below) for dinner last night – yum! It’s official, summer is over and there are signs of fall everywhere – football, mums, Oktoberfest beer, etc. – although you wouldn’t think it given the summer-like weather we’re experiencing today in Ann Arbor. Here’s to changing seasons and guacamole…always guacamole!
Our sweet dog, Melody, is 15 – going on 16 – years old (in human years) and we thought that elevating her food and water bowls might be helpful and more comfortable for her; so Ryan managed to put together a quick, simple but stylish solution with some wood we had sitting around in our garage. I think Melody approves!
I’m not going to lie, when I looked out the window on several occasions on Sunday and saw that it was snowing…yes, snowing…on May 15th…I wasn’t a happy camper. Spring? (#winterainteasy) But, despite the cold, rainy weather we had here all weekend, there were some nice things to appreciate – like napping, lilacs from my backyard, beer on a sunny patio on Friday afternoon, and these super cute, vintage-style glasses and tray I found at a local hardware store!
This is Melody. Melody is 15 years and 5 months old. Melody is from Austin, TX. Melody has a tattoo. When she was younger, we took her to training classes and she learned to sit, stay, wait, park it (on her pillow), leave it, high five, and roll over, she could even “raise the roof”. Melody used to love to run (she still does, sometimes)…and she was really, really fast. For several years, her name on her collar that had our address and phone number in case she ever got lost said “Meldoy” and we never realized we had mistyped it when making it. Melody used to have more brown on her face, but a lot of that has turned to white now. Melody has the cutest spots on her left ear. Melody, as I recently told my parents, is “Texas tough”. Melody is beautiful. Melody is awesome.
Last weekend brought us absolutely perfect spring weather and many of the trees here are now in full bloom; spring in Michigan, while it can be unpredictable, is truly a thing of beauty! Our Hellebores in our side yard are stunning and we picked up some cut flowers at the Farmer’s Market this weekend too. I’m still trying to figure out how to properly use my old school, Polaroid camera – this shot pictured in the photo above came out good though and I almost had to stop myself from drooling over how pretty these flowers are… In other news, Melody is still adorable and an expert at napping!
Last week brought us snow, sleet, rain, and funny memes like this and this; I heard this on the radio which made me laugh, “March, in like a lion. April, in like a fiercer lion.” While the weather was “weathering” (as Ryan likes to say) all day yesterday, I must admit that having a lazy day at home while the rain/sleet/snow fell outside was just what I needed. Yes, that is a fire in my fireplace in the photo above – and yes, it is April in Michigan. All the more reason to enjoy these beautiful blooms in my photo below; mums, roses, and iris to brighten up my kitchen!
I recently, to my delight, discovered this Instagram account: momosface. It is, quite simply and quite wonderfully, a photo of a dog’s (Momo’s) face every day; the photo’s are wonderful, the dog is adorable, and being a dog lover myself I can’t help but smile every time I take a look at these. I also can’t help but feel I missed the opportunity to do the same with my dog, Melody; although, over the years, I have taken several of her perfectly adorable face like these pictured here.
Last Monday, 3/14, was Pi Day and we celebrated by ordering a pizza pie for dinner and enjoying an apple pie for dessert. We remembered to wear our green for St. Patrick’s Day last Thursday too; even Melody had some green in her collar, so we all avoided getting pinched. We made these Blue Apron meals at home (you can view photos here) over the last week: Crispy Brown Butter Gnocchi with Meyer Lemon & Brussels Sprouts, Baked Jerk Tofu & Smashed Plantains with Garlic-Ginger Collard Greens, Roasted Broccoli & Fregola Sarda Salad with Hard-Boiled Eggs & Tahini Dressing (we did fried eggs in place of the hard-boiled eggs), and Mushroom & Poblano Pepper Quesadillas with Monterey Jack Cheese & Avocado-Radish Salsa (we substituted zucchini for the mushrooms, due to allergy). And, as of yesterday, it is officially spring; I really enjoyed our walks with Melody over the weekend, seeing daffodil and crocus blooms, little green shoots coming up from the ground for tulips and lilies, etc., buds on the trees, the sky was such a beautiful shade of blue, and coming across this sweet little sidewalk chalk message pictured above. We picked up some cheery yellow daffodils and white tulips for the house, along with a beautiful purple arrangement I took home from a work event filled with stock, waxflower, and lovely, pale purple roses.
I unfortunately caught what I’m 99% sure is a really nasty cold and have been out of commission for most of the week; I still haven’t gotten over it completely, but am finally feeling better which is a relief. In my sick-with-a-cold, Nyquil, Mucinex, Sudafed (or some combination thereof) haze, there was much sleeping for as many hours as possible and at all hours of the day/night – which I’m sure, thankfully, has helped to lead me down this road to recovery. And through it all I could always count on Melody to be there by my side, sleeping on her pillow close by too – only she looks much cuter than me (you should have seen me when the sinus drainage had gotten to the point where I decided to just shove some Kleenex up one side of my nose to block the flow…sexy, I know). Here’s to good dogs and day dreaming…
Outside: Winter Storm Petros is blowing through the area and has been doing so since yesterday morning. The world is a lovely blanket of white and the snow is still falling…
Inside: We stopped at the grocery store on the way home yesterday to pick up fresh bread, soup, beer, chocolate cake, and some lovely mini daffodils. It may be winter outside, but I’ve got a little spring inside where it’s warm and cozy. Speaking of cozy, look at this little little sweetie all curled up by my feet. Also, I can’t get enough of this blanket!
