carlsbad caverns

Val and I went to Carlsbad Caverns over the break for a quick day trip from El Paso. I’ve been to Carlsbad Caverns several times growing up, being only 2 hours away from El Paso made it a frequent family vacation spot. There is something bizarre and strange about the world beneath ground that has always fascinated me: the formations of rock so drastically different to what we are used to seeing daily, the mysteriousness of not being able to perceive when some spaces end, and the cool still air.

The caves have always amazed me and each time I go I get to see things that I haven’t seen before. In the past I have done tours off the main path or in other caves. This time around Val and I took a lantern tour descent down the natural entrance route into the cave. The 1-mile trek was done with a group of people holding only candle lanterns. To see the cave in this way really conjures all of the mystery that they offer. They only offer the tour on Winter Holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s) and I would recommend it to anyone. Here are some pics from the trip.
